Explore Point Reyes – Incredible Coastal Hiking!

Date Saturday, April 26, 2008
Time 10:00 am
Attire Warm layers, hiking shoes, extra water, sun screen, hat, optional camera
Platinum Free (includes guide, power bars, snacks, water)
Gold $10 (same)
Guests $25 (same)
Category 8 (12 miles, 1600ft elevation gain with two significant uphill climbs)
Details Do we have the hike for you! Join us for Marin's best hike into the wilds. Pristine mountain-top beauty, stunning ocean views and perhaps a few wild Elk along the way. We'll get most of the uphill out of the way early on and then be rewarded with incredible views throughout the day. It's a long hike (but SO worth it!) so be sure to pack a lunch - we'll have plenty of snacks for you along the way too. Feel free to bring some friends along – the more, the merrier - just please let us know how many to expect and who to look out for. Afterwards we’ll head out to the cute little town of Olema for some food/drinks and end the afternoon relaxing with our new friends. Thinking about trying Absolute Adventures out? This is a great event to start you off!
Directions We will be meeting at the far end of the unpaved parking at the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Point Reyes National Seashore. From San Francisco take highway 101 North across the Golden Gate Bridge. Take the San Anselmo/Sir Francis Drake exit (if you’re taking the Richmond Bridge from the East Bay, that pretty much drops you off right at the Sir Francis Drake exit) and follow Sir Francis Drake for about 20 miles as it winds its way through several towns to the little town of Olema (about 1.2 hours from the GG Bridge). When Sir Francis Drake comes to a T at Route 1 turn right. Drive about 150 yards and then turn left on to Bear Valley Rd. Drive about a half mile and you'll see a sign for the Point Reyes Seashore/Bear Valley Visitor Center Headquarters. Turn left and drive about a quarter mile (you'll see the visitor center on your right) and we will be meeting at the far end of the unpaved part of the parking lot on your left.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with outrigger canoeing, the sport has been practiced for over 5000 years. Polynesians navigated the South Pacific in canoes almost 1000 years before Columbus landed in America. Today, Pacific Islanders still use canoes for inter-island transport. For the Polynesian culture, outrigger canoes are more than just a means of transportation. It is the primary means by which teamwork, sharing and a sense of extended family (ohana) are communicated to one another all centered on the core value of performance through cooperation.

Please note that you must be a confident swimmer to participate in this event.

It will provide participants an opportunity to explore San Francisco's unique neighborhoods and uncover hidden aspects of the city as they find their next challenge location. Challenges from last year’s series had participants rappelling down a 15-story tower, holding live snakes and alligators, and singing before a live audience. The winning team will advance to the US Championship to determine who represents the USA at the World Championship.
